What Are Gemini Gems? A Guide

At a glance

Gems are custom versions of Google Gemini that you set up once and reuse. You give a Gem a name and a set of instructions, like “act as my plain-English writing editor,” and it follows them every time so you do not repeat yourself. Google offers premade Gems and lets you build your own. They are Gemini’s answer to ChatGPT’s custom GPTs.

If you find yourself typing the same long setup into Gemini over and over, Gems are the fix. They are one of the most useful features for everyday users, and most people have never tried them. Here is what they are and how to make your first one.

What are Gems, and how do they work?

A Gem is a saved, custom version of Gemini built around instructions you give it once. Instead of explaining what you want every session, you set it up a single time, name it, and then chat with it whenever you need that job done. The Gem remembers its role, so a “meeting notes” Gem always formats your notes the same way, and a “friendly editor” Gem always edits in the tone you asked for.

What can you use Gems for?

Example GemWhat it does
Writing editorEdits your drafts in a set tone and length
Study coachExplains topics and quizzes you at your level
Meal plannerBuilds weekly menus and shopping lists to your diet
Brainstorm partnerGenerates ideas in a format you like

Google also includes some premade Gems so you can try the idea before building your own.

How do you create a Gem?

  • Open the Gemini app and find the Gems area, sometimes called the Gem manager.
  • Choose to make a new Gem and give it a clear name.
  • Write its instructions in plain language: what role it plays, the tone to use, and the format you want back.
  • Add any reference files if it helps, then save and start chatting.

The better your instructions, the better the Gem. Treat it like briefing a new assistant: be specific about what good looks like.

Are Gems free to use?

You can use and create Gems on the free plan, with more capacity on the paid tiers. For where Gems sit across the plans, see our Gemini pricing guide, and for the basics of the app itself, our guide to using Gemini.

How are Gems different from ChatGPT’s custom GPTs?

They are the same idea from two companies. ChatGPT calls its custom assistants GPTs; Gemini calls them Gems. Both let you save a reusable, instruction-driven helper. If you already built custom GPTs, Gems will feel familiar, and the same habit of writing clear instructions carries over.

Who should bother with Gems?

Worth it if you repeat a task. Gems pay off when you do the same kind of work often: weekly planning, editing in a set style, or studying a subject. Build the Gem to handle the setup, then put your own judgment into reviewing what it gives back. It saves the busywork, not the thinking.

If you only use Gemini now and then, you may not need a Gem yet. But the first time you catch yourself pasting the same instructions twice, that is the moment to make one. New to all of this? Start at our start here hub.

Common questions about Gemini Gems

Do Gems remember past chats?

A Gem remembers its instructions, the role and style you set. For details that should carry across chats, include them in the Gem’s instructions or any reference files you add.

Can you share a Gem with others?

In many cases yes, sharing options are available, which is handy for teams or family who want the same helper. Check the app for the current sharing settings.

How many Gems can I make?

You can create several, and the paid plans allow more. Start with one or two for your most repeated tasks rather than building a long list you never use.

Are Gems the same as a regular chat?

No. A regular chat starts blank each time. A Gem starts with your saved instructions already in place, so you skip the setup and get straight to the task.
