What are Claude Artifacts?
Artifacts are Claude‘s system for displaying substantial generated content — code, HTML pages, documents, SVG diagrams, React components, Mermaid charts — in a dedicated panel alongside the chat. Instead of code being trapped inside the conversation as a wall of text, it renders as a live interactive object you can view, edit, and re-render.
Launched by Anthropic in June 2024, Artifacts changed how people use Claude for creative and technical work. Generating a marketing landing page? It renders right there for you to preview. Writing a long article? It appears as a clean document. Coding a small app? It runs in a sandboxed preview.
Why do Claude Artifacts matter?
Artifacts transformed Claude into a more capable workspace for substantial creative and technical work. Before Artifacts, AI chat felt great for short tasks but awkward for building anything substantial — you couldn’t see the output in context, couldn’t iterate efficiently, couldn’t share the result without copy-pasting walls of code.
With Artifacts, Claude became a viable tool for prototyping web apps, building visualizations, drafting long documents, and writing code that you can actually try. Many of Claude’s power users say Artifacts is the most-used feature they didn’t know they needed.
How do you use Claude Artifacts?
Artifacts trigger automatically when Claude generates substantial code, an HTML/SVG document, a Mermaid diagram, a React component, or a long document. The Artifacts panel slides out from the right side of the conversation. You can view, copy, or download the content; ask Claude to refine it (the Artifact updates in place); publish it as a shareable link.
The Publish-an-Artifact feature is increasingly used as a lightweight way to share AI-generated tools and prototypes. Public Artifacts live at claude.ai/share and have become a small ecosystem of community-shared tools, demos, and reference patterns.
