What are Claude Skills?

Claude Skills are reusable instruction packages built by Anthropic and the community that turn Claude into a specialized assistant for specific tasks. Each Skill bundles together: a clear role definition, behavioral instructions, optional reference files, and which tools Claude should use. Loaded into a Claude conversation, the Skill makes Claude behave like an expert in that domain.

Think of a Skill as the Claude equivalent of OpenAI’s Custom GPTs or Google’s Gems. The difference: Skills are designed to be more composable — multiple Skills can stack in a single conversation, and many Skills are open-source rather than locked in a marketplace.

Why do Claude Skills matter?

Skills solve a practical problem: most useful AI workflows require giving the model context that doesn’t change across sessions (your role, your style guide, your reference documents, your preferences). Without Skills, you re-paste that context every time. With Skills, you load it once and re-use it.

Anthropic launched an official Skills library at the end of 2025 with curated skills for common tasks: PowerPoint generation, Excel formula help, brand-voice writing, code review, research synthesis, etc. Many are open-source so developers can adapt them. The Skills library has rapidly become one of the most-recommended starting points for new Claude users.

How do you use Claude Skills?

Inside Claude (claude.ai), navigate to the Skills section and browse the official library. To use a Skill: click to load it, then chat as normal. Claude’s behavior shifts to match the Skill’s instructions. You can combine multiple Skills in one conversation.

Building your own Skill: from the Skills page, click Create. Write the instructions (the system prompt), upload any reference files (style guides, documentation), specify tool access. Save and use. Pro/Max users can share Skills with their team.
