What is Anthropic?

Anthropic is an AI research company founded in 2021 by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, along with several other former OpenAI researchers. The founding thesis: as AI systems become more capable, the technical work of making sure they’re safe and aligned with human intent needs to happen at the frontier — not in a paper later. Anthropic was structured as a public-benefit corporation to keep that mission centered as the company scaled.

Why does Anthropic matter?

The flagship product is Claude, the AI assistant most known for thoughtful long-form writing, careful reasoning, and a more nuanced approach to refusals than ChatGPT. Anthropic also offers the Claude API for developers, Claude Code (a coding-focused agent), and a growing line of enterprise tools. Claude is the third-largest consumer AI assistant by usage in 2026, behind ChatGPT and Gemini.

Anthropic’s research output is also influential beyond its products — concepts like Constitutional AI, interpretability work on how models actually reason, and detailed research on AI safety have shaped how other labs approach these problems.

Who funds and runs Anthropic?

Major backers include Google, Amazon, and Salesforce, with total funding into the tens of billions of dollars. Dario Amodei serves as CEO; Daniela Amodei is President. The company has grown to over 1,000 employees by 2026 with offices in San Francisco, London, and other global cities.

Anthropic publishes a Responsible Scaling Policy that defines what capability thresholds trigger additional safety evaluations. This framework is widely cited as one of the most concrete approaches to managing frontier AI risk.
