Who was John Holt and how did unschooling start?

John Holt (1923-1985) was an American educator who taught fifth grade at private schools in the 1950s and 1960s. He wrote How Children Fail in 1964 and How Children Learn in 1967 — books that made him famous as a school-reform writer. He spent the early 1970s arguing that schools could be made better. Around 1976 he concluded they could not, and shifted his work to advocating for keeping children out of schools entirely.   • No daily schedule. The child wakes when they wake. Eats when hungry. Starts work on what they’re working on. The structure is the child’s own.
  • Rich environment. Books everywhere. Art supplies accessible. Building materials. Garden tools. A kitchen the child can use. Often a workshop or maker space. Library trips, museums, performances are routine.

  • Project troubleshooting. A 12-year-old building a small electronics project asks Claude how a transistor works. A 10-year-old working through a recipe asks why the dough isn’t rising. A 14-year-old learning guitar asks about chord theory. AI handles the just-in-time question the child encounters mid-project.
  • Skill acquisition the child is pursuing on their own. Coding, language learning, writing fiction, drawing in a particular style. AI as the always-available tutor for the specific thing the child has decided to learn.
  • Creative collaboration. Writing stories, brainstorming game ideas, sparring with AI characters, generating writing prompts. Unschool kids often arrive at AI as a creative collaborator rather than as a homework-completer.
  • Adult-style information work. Researching a place before a family trip, understanding a news event the family is discussing, looking up the historical context for a book they’re reading. The child uses AI the way a curious adult uses AI.
  • Math when math is needed for a project. A young unschooler who wants to understand probability for a game they’re designing will work through math the AI scaffolds. The math arrives when the project demands it, which is exactly the unschool theory.

Where are the risks for unschool families?

  • AI crowds out the messier inputs. The richness of unschool environments comes from the variety — physical books, real materials, conversations with real adults, time outdoors, projects with friction. If AI becomes the default first source for every question, the other inputs get used less. The child’s environment narrows.   • Strong standardized test scores. A test-optional college may take a portfolio without scores; a test-required college will need them.
