What it is: Optimus is Tesla’s humanoid robot. It walks on two legs, has two arms, and is built to do jobs humans don’t want to do.
Who it’s for: Anyone curious about Tesla’s robot
Best if: You’ve seen the videos and want the plain facts
Skip if: You already follow Tesla closely
Optimus is a robot made by Tesla (the car company). It stands about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs around 125 pounds, and walks on two legs. Elon Musk showed it off for the first time in 2022.
What it’s supposed to do
- Boring, repeat-every-day jobs
- Dangerous jobs (like working with chemicals)
- Heavy lifting in factories
- House chores, one day
How it works
Optimus uses the same AI that Tesla cars use to self-drive. Cameras are its “eyes.” A computer brain decides what to do. Motors in its arms and legs are like muscles.
Is it for sale?
Not yet. Tesla is testing it in their own factories. Elon Musk said it may cost around $20,000 to $30,000 someday. Expect real sales later in the 2020s.
Optimus is part of a bigger trend called humanoid robots. Many companies (Boston Dynamics, Figure, Apptronik) are racing to build them.
