What is Claude Code?

What it is: Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding & automation agent. It runs in your terminal, inside the Claude desktop app, in IDE extensions (VS Code, JetBrains), on the web at claude.ai/code, and in the Claude iOS app — same engine in all of them.

Claude Code is a tool you install on your computer. It lets Claude (the AI) do things on your computer — not just talk to you in a chat window.

Think of it like this. Regular Claude is like talking to a smart friend on the phone. Claude Code is like that friend coming over to your house and helping with your actual work.

What Claude Code can do

• Read your files. PDFs, Word docs, spreadsheets, code files.
• Change your files. Edit them with your permission.
• Write and run code. Great for developers.
• Run plugins. Like The 44% Rule or Content Repurposer.
• Do multi-step tasks. “Read this file, summarize it, then save the summary.”

Do you need to know how to code?

No. The name has “code” in it, but you can use Claude Code without writing a single line. Business owners, writers, researchers, and teachers use it for all kinds of non-coding work.

How to get it

It’s free. You can download it from docs.claude.com/en/docs/claude-code/quickstart. Takes about 2 minutes to install.

Where Claude Code runs

• Terminal (CLI) — the original. Run claude inside any project folder. Best for developers and scripting.
• Claude desktop app — same engine, with a visual file tree and split panes. Launch Claude, click the Code tab.
• IDE extensions — VS Code, Cursor, JetBrains. Claude becomes a sidebar in your editor.
• Web — claude.ai/code in a browser tab.
• iOS — inside the official Claude mobile app.

Cost

The Claude Code tool itself is free to install. You need a Claude Pro plan ($20/mo, or $17/mo billed annually), Max plan, or pay-per-use API credits to actually use it. The free Claude tier doesn’t include Claude Code.
