The strict statistical definition: students scoring at or above the 95th-98th percentile on standardized cognitive measures (typically IQ tests like the WISC-V, WJ-IV Cognitive, Stanford-Binet) or above the 95th-98th percentile on grade-level achievement tests. Roughly 2-5% of the U.S. K-12 population by this definition, depending on the threshold used.

A gifted student who develops all their substantive intellectual exchanges with AI may struggle in human conversations where adults move on, get impatient, or have different priorities. Real human conversation — with mentors, in classes, at family table — remains developmentally important.
- Avoidance of weakness. Gifted students sometimes avoid subjects where they’re not gifted. AI makes it easier to indulge this pattern (doubling down on strong areas) than to address it (deliberately working on weaker dimensions). The parent or mentor’s job is to push back on this.
