What is a Research Preview?

What it is: A research preview is an AI feature that works but hasn’t been fully released. You’re an early user and should expect rough edges.

"Research preview" is Anthropic’s label for a feature that is live and usable, but not finished. You can turn it on; it just isn’t the company’s official, stable, fully-supported product yet. OpenAI and Google use similar labels: beta, experimental, preview, early access. They all mean roughly the same thing.

What it tells you to expect

• It works most of the time. Companies don’t ship previews that are broken; they ship ones that aren’t polished.
• Rough edges. Error messages, occasional failures, missing safeguards you’d expect from a finished product.
• Behavior can change. The feature may get better, more limited, or renamed between today and its full release.
• Your feedback matters. Research previews exist partly so the company can learn how you use them.

Should you use research-preview features?

For exploratory work, experiments, and learning — yes, absolutely. That’s what they’re for. For mission-critical work — anything where a mistake is expensive or embarrassing — probably wait for the stable version, or at least keep a close eye on what the feature is doing. Preview features should be watched, not left alone.
