Who Owns Anthropic? Can You Invest?

At a glance

Anthropic is the company behind Claude. It was started in 2021 by Dario and Daniela Amodei and is a privately held public benefit corporation. Its biggest backers are Amazon and Google. You cannot buy Anthropic stock on a public exchange because it is not public yet. The only ways to get exposure today are owning Amazon or Alphabet shares, or waiting for a possible future listing. This is information, not financial advice.

If you use Claude and have wondered who is behind it, or you have searched for “Anthropic stock” and come up confused, this is the plain-English answer. We cover who owns Anthropic, who its big investors are, whether you can buy in, and what to watch for.

Who owns Anthropic?

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by a group of researchers who had previously worked at OpenAI, led by the siblings Dario Amodei (chief executive) and Daniela Amodei (president). They still lead the company today.

Anthropic is set up as a public benefit corporation, which means it is legally allowed to weigh public benefit alongside profit. It is governed by a board of directors and an unusual extra body called the Long-Term Benefit Trust. The board includes the two Amodeis and the Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings, among others. So ownership sits with the founders, employees, and the outside investors who have funded it, not with public shareholders.

What is Anthropic, and what does it make?

Anthropic describes itself as an AI safety and research company. Its main product is Claude, the AI assistant you can chat with for writing, planning, research, and more. If you want to see the current model lineup, our guide to Claude’s AI models in 2026 and the Claude Fable 5 explainer walk through what each one does. The company’s stated focus is building AI that is reliable and steerable, and it puts safety research at the center of how it works.

Who are Anthropic’s biggest investors?

Two of the largest technology companies in the world are Anthropic’s headline backers, alongside a long list of venture and institutional investors.

InvestorRole
AmazonLargest backer, with a reported investment of around $8 billion; Claude runs on Amazon’s cloud
GoogleHolds roughly 14 percent of the company in equity
Venture and institutional fundsDozens more investors across Anthropic’s funding rounds

Both Amazon and Google have seen the value of their stakes climb sharply as Anthropic has grown, according to reporting by Fortune. Importantly, neither one controls the company; they are investors, not owners in the everyday sense.

Is Anthropic publicly traded, and can you buy Anthropic stock?

No. As of June 2026, Anthropic is a private company. There is no Anthropic ticker symbol, and you cannot buy its shares through a normal brokerage account. Anyone claiming to sell you “Anthropic stock” today should be treated with suspicion.

Watch out for scams: because so many people search for Anthropic stock, scammers sometimes advertise fake pre-IPO shares or “exclusive” deals. Until Anthropic lists publicly and you can buy it through a regulated broker, assume any such offer is not real.

How can you invest in Anthropic indirectly?

Since you cannot buy Anthropic directly, the common ways people get indirect exposure are:

  • Owning Amazon (AMZN) shares. Amazon is Anthropic’s largest backer, so its stake is part of what you own as an Amazon shareholder. The effect is small, because Anthropic is one piece of a giant company.
  • Owning Alphabet (GOOGL) shares. Google’s parent holds a meaningful slice of Anthropic, so the same logic applies.
  • Waiting for a possible IPO. If Anthropic lists publicly, ordinary investors would be able to buy shares through a broker at that point.

Not financial advice. This guide explains how the company is structured. It is not a recommendation to buy any stock. Investing carries risk, and a stake in one of these large companies is not the same as owning Anthropic itself.

Will Anthropic have an IPO?

There is no confirmed date. Through 2026, several outlets have reported that Anthropic is moving toward a public listing, and that an IPO would finally show how big Amazon’s and Google’s stakes really are. Treat all of it as reporting and expectation, not a scheduled event. If a listing happens, it would be widely covered well in advance.

How much is Anthropic worth?

A lot, and the number keeps rising. Anthropic’s announced funding rounds have valued it in the hundreds of billions of dollars; in its Series G round the company reported a $380 billion post-money valuation. Reporting in 2026 points to a coming public listing at an even higher figure. For a sense of scale, that puts Anthropic among the most valuable private companies in the world, despite being only a few years old. Curious what its product actually costs to use? Common questions about Anthropic ownership

How much of Anthropic does Amazon own?

Amazon is Anthropic’s largest investor and its cloud partner, but it does not own or control the company. Anthropic has not made Amazon’s exact stake public; the founders, employees, and a range of other investors hold the rest.

How much of Anthropic does Google own?

Google’s parent, Alphabet, holds a sizeable minority stake of around 14 percent. That makes it a major investor, but Anthropic stays independent and is led by its founders.

Can I buy Anthropic stock right now?

No. Anthropic is private, so there are no public shares to buy. The closest options are owning Amazon or Alphabet, or waiting to see whether Anthropic lists in the future.

Who is the CEO of Anthropic?

Dario Amodei is the chief executive. He co-founded the company with his sister, Daniela Amodei, who is president.
