Interstellar (2014) gave cinema one of its most beloved AI characters in TARS—and did it without a humanoid body, glowing eyes, or a sinister undertone. TARS is a rectangular monolith with a wry sense of humor, absolute loyalty, and a “honesty setting” you can adjust like a volume knob. In an era of AI cinema dominated by threats and servitude, TARS was something radical: a trustworthy machine friend.
Fun Fact: TARS and CASE (the second robot) were originally written as much more conventional humanoid robots. Christopher Nolan scrapped that design after watching footage from real NASA robotics labs and deciding humanoid robots looked ‘weirdly theatrical.’ He then spent months exploring industrial design references—docking mechanisms, safety equipment, folding structures—before arriving at the four-panel monolith design.
