What Is a VCP (Volatility Contraction Pattern)?

What it is: The Volatility Contraction Pattern is a chart shape Mark Minervini popularized. The stock’s price swings get smaller and smaller, then it breaks out.
Who it’s for: Anyone reading about growth-stock chart patterns.
Best if: You’ve heard the term “VCP” in a trading post and want to know what it actually looks like.
Skip if: You can spot a VCP on a chart in two seconds already.

A VCP, or Volatility Contraction Pattern, is a chart shape that traders look for before a stock breaks out to new highs. Mark Minervini popularized it in his book Trade Like a Stock Market Wizard (2013).

The shape: a stock has a big run-up, then pulls back. Then it pulls back a smaller amount. Then a smaller amount still. Each “swing” is tighter than the last. The volume usually drops as the swings get smaller. Eventually the stock breaks out above the prior high.

Think of it like a coiled spring. Each pullback compresses the spring more. When the breakout happens, the energy released often produces a fast, sustained move.

The pattern shows up on weekly or daily charts most clearly. Minervini specifies measurable rules: the contractions should reduce in depth (e.g., a 15% pullback, then a 10%, then a 5%) and the final base should be at least 5–7 weeks long.

Why it matters

VCP is one of the most-traded chart patterns in growth-stock trading because the entry rules are clear: buy on the breakout above the most recent contraction high, place a stop just below that contraction low. The risk is defined.

AI tools can be trained to spot VCP setups on charts, which makes it useful for scanning workflows. See AI stock chart analysis for how this works in practice.
