What it is: A chat interface is the type-and-reply box you use to talk to AI, like ChatGPT or Claude. You type a message. The AI types back.

A chat interface is how you talk to AI. It looks like texting a friend. You see a box at the bottom of the screen. You type. You hit enter. The AI answers above.
This is the main way most people use AI today. Every big AI tool — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — uses a chat interface because it’s simple. If you can text, you can use AI.
Parts of a chat interface
- Message box. Where you type.
- Conversation. Your messages and the AI’s replies, stacked like a text thread.
- History. Past conversations saved on the side. You can go back and keep talking.
- Buttons. For things like uploading a file, turning on voice, or picking a model.
Tips for using a chat interface
- Be clear. The better you write your prompt, the better the answer.
- Keep going. If the first answer isn’t great, say “try again but shorter” or “make it funnier.”
- Save important chats. You can name them or star them for later.
- Use voice if typing is slow. Most chat tools now let you talk to them.
Chat interfaces aren’t the only way to use AI. You can also use AI agents, workflows, and APIs. But for most people, chat is still the easiest place to start.
