The honest answer for ages 3-5 is that AI doesn’t have much of a role in the child’s daily life and shouldn’t. Early childhood is the developmental period that most depends on what AI cannot provide: face-to-face interaction with adults who love the child, slow conversations during ordinary tasks, free unstructured play, outdoor time, hands-on engagement with real physical materials, picture books read aloud, the felt presence of older people who pay attention. None of this is best mediated through a screen. Most of it is actively worse when screen-mediated.

What AI legitimately does in the early years is support the adults around the child — making the parent or preschool teacher a better adult. What does the developmental research actually say?

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ screen-time guidance is the most-cited current position: no screen time at all for children under 18-24 months except for video calls with family; limited high-quality programming for ages 2-5, with co-viewing whenever possible; and prioritization of unstructured play and direct caregiver interaction throughout early childhood. The guidance was last meaningfully revised in 2016 and has not been substantially loosened since; the body of evidence accumulated through the past decade has, if anything, hardened the case for restraint.

What the research keeps finding in roughly the same direction:

  • Language development depends on face-to-face conversation, not screens. The classic Hart and Risley research (1995) documented enormous variation in early language exposure across socioeconomic groups. More-recent work, particularly that of Anne Fernald at Stanford, has refined the picture: it’s not just the quantity of words a child hears but specifically the back-and-forth conversational turns with a responsive adult that drive language acquisition. Screens — including the most-educational ones — do not provide back-and-forth conversation in the way an adult does. Replacing adult conversation time with screen time produces measurable language-development costs.
  • Joint attention with adults is foundational. A 3-year-old looking at a picture book with a parent who points to images, names them, asks questions, and follows the child’s interest is doing developmental work that’s central to later reading, social cognition, and even emotion regulation. The same child watching the same content on a screen, even with the same parent in the room, is doing measurably less of this developmental work.
  • Sleep, attention, and executive function are sensitive to screen time at this age. Multiple longitudinal studies have associated heavy early-childhood screen exposure with later attention difficulties, sleep disturbances, and reduced executive-function development. The associations are stronger for entertainment-style media than for educational content, but they exist across categories.
  • Free unstructured play is irreplaceable. Peter Gray’s Free to Learn (Basic Books, 2013) synthesizes a substantial body of research on the developmental importance of self-directed play. The decline in unstructured play time over the past several decades correlates with rises in childhood anxiety, depression, and various measures of social-skill deficit. Screens compete with play for the same daily minutes.
  • Outdoor time matters more than indoor time matters. Richard Louv’s Last Child in the Woods (Algonquin Books, 2005) coined the term “nature-deficit disorder” and pulled together research showing that direct contact with the natural world supports cognitive development, attention regulation, physical health, and emotional resilience in ways indoor activity does not. The displacement of outdoor time by screen time is one of the most-significant negative trends in modern early childhood.

None of this is news to most pediatricians or early-childhood educators. The professional consensus on early-childhood screen time has been remarkably stable for fifteen years. The accumulating evidence has hardened rather than softened it.

What does the 3-5 year old actually need?

The list is short and well-supported.

  • Conversation with adults who pay attention. Daily. Substantial. About anything. The conversation is the curriculum at this age.
  • Picture books read aloud. Daily. Many. The same favorites again and again. New ones regularly. Library trips are one of the highest-leverage habits at this age.
  • Free play. Hours of it daily. With other children when possible. With siblings, neighbors, co-op friends, cousins, anyone. Sometimes alone, sometimes with adults playing alongside.
  • Outdoor time. Daily, regardless of weather. Backyard, park, woods, beach, sidewalk. The physical engagement with the natural and built environments matters enormously.
  • Real materials. Crayons, paint, paper, dough, blocks, dirt, water, sand, pots and pans, dress-up clothes, sticks. Physical objects the child manipulates with their hands. Not apps that simulate manipulation.
  • Family meals. The dinner table is not just food. It’s where conversation happens, where vocabulary expands, where children learn to wait their turn, where the rhythm of family life is established.
  • Predictable rhythm. Same wake time, same bedtime, same general daily pattern. Children at this age thrive on predictability.
  • One or two trusted adults who are reliably present. Parents, grandparents, an aunt, a caregiver. Children need to know who their adults are.

Notice what’s not on this list. Phonics apps. Letter-tracing software. Number-recognition games. “Educational” YouTube. Coding for preschoolers. These are not developmental necessities at this age — at best they’re enrichment that doesn’t help; at worst they crowd out the actual developmental work and produce visible costs.

Where does AI legitimately fit in a preschool-aged child’s life?

Almost entirely on the adult side. Specifically:

  • Parents using AI to find picture books and read-alouds. “Find me five excellent picture books about kindness for a 4-year-old, including books in print and books worth requesting through interlibrary loan.” AI is an excellent librarian. The parent then takes the list to the library.
  • Parents using AI to answer “why” questions at adult level so they can re-explain at the child’s level. The 3-year-old asks why the sky is blue. The parent honestly doesn’t remember the full Rayleigh-scattering explanation. AI tells the parent. The parent then says, “you know what, let me tell you something interesting — the air is full of tiny invisible things, and when light from the sun bounces off them, the blue parts of the light bounce all over the place, which is why the sky looks blue.” The parent has just become a better conversation partner for the child.
  • Preschool teachers using AI for lesson planning, parent communication, and administrative work. The lesson-planning time AI saves is time the teacher gets back to be present with children. The administrative time saved is preserved cognitive bandwidth.
  • Parents using AI to plan family outings, find local activities, identify nature features. “What’s a good morning activity for a 4-year-old in our area this weekend?” “We saw a yellow-and-black butterfly today — what species is it?” AI does the parent’s research; the parent and child do the activity.
  • Music for the household. Asking AI for kid-friendly classical music suggestions, hymn lists, folk-song collections — then playing the actual music for the household. The AI is in the planning; the child is in the music.
  • Bilingual or multilingual households. A parent learning their partner’s language alongside the children can use Speak or ChatGPT Voice for their own practice. The children benefit from the parent’s growing fluency in conversation with them.

What about Khan Academy Kids, Reading Eggs, and the rest?

These products exist and many are designed thoughtfully for the 3-5 age range. Honest assessment:

  • Khan Academy Kids (free) is among the better products in this category. Designed for ages 2-7, no ads, no in-app purchases, content reviewed by early-childhood educators. If a family is going to use any screen-based educational content with preschoolers, this is a defensible choice.
  • Reading Eggs (~$60/year) is widely used and produces measurable early-reading progress for children who use it consistently. The literature on whether early-reading-app progress translates into long-term reading outcomes is mixed.
  • Lalilo (free / freemium) is well-regarded for phonics-based early reading instruction with a research-grounded approach.
  • Hooked on Phonics (subscription) has been a long-running phonics-curriculum brand with substantial parent confidence.

The honest framing for these products: they can be one input in a rich early-childhood environment. They cannot substitute for the components above. A 4-year-old using Khan Academy Kids for 15 minutes a day in an otherwise screen-light, conversation-rich, book-rich, outside-rich life is fine. The same 4-year-old using Khan Academy Kids for two hours a day instead of conversation, books, and play is being shortchanged regardless of how educational the app technically is.

If you ask any of these companies whether their product can replace adult interaction at this age, the honest ones will say no. Most do say no in their marketing copy if you read carefully.

The high-leverage adult habits at this age

  • Daily read-aloud. 20-30 minutes at minimum. Same time of day if possible. Sometimes books the child has chosen; sometimes books the parent has chosen. The “read it again!” of the much-repeated favorite is doing as much developmental work as the new book.
  • Library card actively used. Weekly trips. Let the child pick. Take what they want; add what you think they’d like. The child whose family treats the library as a Saturday default has built one of the most-powerful long-term habits available.
  • Conversation during ordinary tasks. Talking while cooking. Talking while folding laundry. Talking on walks. Talking while gardening. The everyday-life conversation between adult and child is the language curriculum at this age.
  • Outdoor time daily. Even 15 minutes when weather is hard. Real preference for 1-2 hours when possible. Boredom is allowed; the child does not need to be entertained outdoors.
  • Family meals without screens. The dinner table is for conversation and food. Phones away. Television off. The 20-30 minutes of family talk at meals over years is one of the most-important developmental inputs.
  • Predictable bedtime. Reading at bedtime. Lullabies. Same routine. Children at this age sleep more than they will at any later age; the sleep is part of the developmental work.
  • Real play with real children. Cousins, neighbors, co-op friends, preschool. Daily peer time when feasible. The social skills built at this age are the foundation for everything later.
  • Adult modeling of phone-restraint. Parents who are absorbed in their phones during family time are teaching the child that phones are where attention belongs. This is one of the strongest predictors of the child’s later relationship with screens. The parent’s phone discipline matters as much as the child’s.

What if we already use screens a lot with our preschooler?

You’re in the majority. The data on actual preschool screen-time consumption is sobering — many U.S. preschoolers average several hours a day of screen time, well above the AAP guidance. If you’re reducing from a high baseline, it’s worth doing, but the path matters.

Practical pattern that works:

  • Add before you subtract. Add the physical books, the library trips, the outdoor time, the planned playdates, the real materials. Some of the screen time will fall away naturally as the alternatives become satisfying.
  • Replace high-stimulation content first. Fast-cut entertainment YouTube and similar content is worse for early-childhood attention than slower, more deliberate content. Removing the fast stuff first produces the most visible improvement.
  • Build a predictable rhythm. Designated outdoor time, designated read-aloud time, designated meal time, designated bedtime. The structure does the work of crowding out screens without requiring constant willpower.
  • Don’t go all-or-nothing. A family that swings from heavy screen time to zero screen time often swings back. A family that establishes a sustainable low-screen baseline tends to maintain it.
  • Don’t moralize at the child. The child does not understand or care about screen-time research. The structure is what changes their experience; the parents enforce the structure without making the child feel bad about wanting screens.
  • Watch the parent’s own phone use. The single highest-leverage intervention is usually adult phone-discipline. Children copy what they see.

Where does AI fit when the child is at preschool or daycare?

For preschool teachers and daycare providers, AI is one of the strongest professional-development tools that’s emerged in recent years — when used carefully. The right uses:

  • Lesson and activity planning. Generating themed weekly plans, finding age-appropriate book suggestions, drafting craft activities, identifying songs and rhymes that fit the curriculum.
  • Parent communication. Drafting daily-report templates, weekly newsletters, individual notes about a child’s progress. Time the teacher gets back is time spent with children.
  • Developmental observations and documentation. Many preschool programs require ongoing developmental observations of each child. AI helps convert teacher notes into the formal documentation required.
  • Curriculum research. When the program is exploring a new approach (Reggio Emilia, Montessori-aligned, nature-based), AI provides quick background research for staff.
  • Substitute lesson plans. The teacher is sick, the substitute needs activities the children will respond to. AI helps generate appropriate materials quickly.

What AI doesn’t do in a high-quality preschool: replace the teacher’s actual presence with the children. The AI is invisible administrative support. The children experience the adults more, not less.

Preschool is the place AI tutoring belongs least. Three to five year olds learn through play, embodied movement, and warm human relationships. The neuroscience is unambiguous: screens during these years substitute for things the brain genuinely needs. Apps marketed as preschool education are mostly worse than blocks, sand, and a parent reading aloud.

Where AI does fit at the preschool age is on the parent side. A parent can use Claude to generate craft ideas, find age-appropriate books, plan a science experiment for a rainy day, or get a quick answer about a developmental milestone. The AI assists the adult. The kid stays free of screens.

Use AI to be a better preschool parent. Keep the preschool itself analog. The early years are when this rule matters most.

Frequently asked questions

My 4-year-old already knows how to use my phone. Have we ruined them?

No. Children are resilient and habits are reversible. Add the alternatives. Reduce the screens gradually. Watch the child’s daily rhythm shift over weeks rather than days. Most of the developmental effects of childhood screen use are dose-dependent and reversible to some degree at this age. The further intervention you can do, the better — but you have not ruined anything.

Are FaceTime calls with grandparents counted as screen time?

The AAP specifically exempts video calls with family from its under-2 no-screen recommendation, recognizing the relational value of grandparent and other-family connection. Video calls are best when they’re conversational and the adult on the other end is actively engaged with the child, not when the screen is on while the child plays alone. For school-age children traveling away from grandparents or with relatives abroad, regular video calls are one of the most-supported uses of children’s screen time at any age.

My preschool uses tablets daily for “learning.” Is this a problem?

Possibly. Quality varies enormously. A program using tablets for 15 minutes of teacher-led group activity is different from a program parking children in front of educational apps for an hour to manage staff ratios. Visit the classroom. Watch what’s actually happening. If tablet time is being substituted for the teacher’s presence with children, that’s a concern; if it’s a small piece of a rich classroom experience, less so. The NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) has published technology-and-young-children position statements that can guide conversations with the program.

When should we start formal academics?

For most children, later than the U.S. mainstream assumes. Several mainstream homeschool philosophies — Moore Formula, Waldorf, Charlotte Mason — argue for delaying formal academic instruction until ages 7-8 with substantial empirical and developmental support. Finnish schools, internationally top-ranked, formally start reading instruction at age 7. The early-academics push has weaker evidence behind it than parents commonly assume.

What if my preschooler is “ahead” and wants more?

Read them harder books. Have richer conversations. Take them more places. Engage with their interests deeply. Don’t push formal academics earlier just because they can; the depth and breadth of their pre-academic exposure will pay off in the academic years much more than premature flash-card work. Should I let my 4-year-old talk to ChatGPT?

Probably not directly. The content moderation is imperfect for the youngest users, the experience of conversational AI can shape early expectations about how language and minds work in subtle ways, and the developmental gains are minimal compared to actual human conversation. If your 4-year-old has a question and you’re not sure of the answer, you ask the AI yourself privately and then talk to your child as a knowledgeable parent. The child experiences a smarter parent, not a smart AI.
