What is Andrej Karpathy? — AI Glossary

What it is: Andrej Karpathy is a leading AI researcher and educator. Co-founder of OpenAI (left, returned, then left again), former Director of AI at Tesla, and creator of widely-watched YouTube lectures that make AI accessible to non-researchers.
Who it is for: Anyone learning AI, building AI products, or interested in clear technical communication.
Best if: You’re learning AI fundamentals — Karpathy’s YouTube series is widely considered the best free resource for understanding LLMs from first principles.

Who is Andrej Karpathy?

Andrej Karpathy (born 1986) is a Slovak-Canadian AI researcher, educator, and entrepreneur. He was a founding member of OpenAI in 2015, left in 2017 to become Director of AI at Tesla (where he led Autopilot through major iterations), returned to OpenAI in 2023, and left again in 2024 to focus on AI education and his startup Eureka Labs.

He holds a PhD from Stanford under Fei-Fei Li, where he created Stanford’s influential CS231n course on deep learning. His YouTube tutorials on neural networks, GPT, tokenization, and LLM internals have been viewed by millions and are widely cited as the clearest free explanations of modern AI technology.

Why does Andrej Karpathy matter?

Karpathy is one of the most influential AI educators of his generation. His ability to take complex deep-learning concepts and explain them with clarity — through code, diagrams, and intuition rather than just math — has helped train a generation of AI engineers. His lecture series “Neural Networks: Zero to Hero” (free on YouTube) builds a small GPT from scratch and is the most-recommended starting point for understanding how modern LLMs actually work.

Karpathy also coined or popularized many concepts that became industry standard. The term “vibe coding” — describing AI-assisted programming where you express intent in natural language and accept the AI’s implementation without close review — was popularized by Karpathy in 2024. His blog posts and tweets are widely read by both researchers and industry practitioners.

What is Karpathy working on now?

In 2024 Karpathy founded Eureka Labs, an AI-focused education company building “AI-native” courses where AI tutors work alongside human teachers to help students learn. The first course, LLM101n, focuses on building large language models from scratch.

His public stance on AI is technically grounded — he generally believes current LLMs are extraordinarily useful but have specific limitations that AI commentators sometimes overlook. He’s skeptical of the most extreme AI timelines (both the “AGI tomorrow” camp and the “LLMs are a dead end” camp) and emphasizes building practical understanding over speculation.
