Who is Andrew Ng?
Andrew Ng (born 1976) is a Stanford computer science professor, AI entrepreneur, and one of the most prolific AI educators of the modern era. His Stanford Machine Learning course (released as a free online course in 2011) has had more than 4 million enrollments and is widely credited with introducing the field to a generation of practitioners.
His professional history reads like a tour of major AI moments: co-founder of Coursera (2012), founding lead of Google Brain (2011), Chief Scientist at Baidu (2014-2017), founder of DeepLearning.AI (2017), founder of Landing AI (2017), and co-founder of multiple AI funds. He continues teaching at Stanford and remains one of the most-followed voices in AI on social media.
Why does Andrew Ng matter?
Ng essentially invented online machine-learning education. His 2011 Stanford ML course was the first widely-accessible structured path into the field, and the courses through Coursera and DeepLearning.AI that followed have trained the engineers who now work at every major AI lab. Many leading AI researchers cite Ng’s courses as their entry point.
At Google Brain (which he founded), Ng oversaw early breakthrough work that established deep learning as the dominant approach to modern AI. The famous 2012 “cat detector” — a neural network that learned to recognize cats from YouTube videos without being told what cats are — came from his team.
What is Ng’s position on AI?
Ng is a measured optimist about AI. He famously dismissed the most alarmist AI extinction-risk concerns as “worrying about overpopulation on Mars” — meaning real but premature given how much closer present-day AI risks are.
