Andrew Yan-Tak Ng (born 18 April 1976 in London) has done more than any other individual to make AI education accessible to millions of learners worldwide. Early Life and Academic Formation

Andrew Ng was born in London to Hong Kong parents and grew up partly in Hong Kong and Singapore. He studied statistics and computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, graduating with a BS in 1997, then completed his PhD in computer science at the University of California Berkeley in 2002 under Michael Jordan — one of the most influential probabilistic machine learning researchers of the era. His dissertation explored reinforcement learning and its application to autonomous helicopters.

After Berkeley, Ng joined the Stanford faculty in 2002 as an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department and at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL), where he eventually served as director. Google Brain: Founding the Modern AI Infrastructure

In 2011 Ng founded Google Brain, Google’s deep learning research team, as part of Google X. The initial project — training a deep neural network on 10 million YouTube video frames using 16,000 CPU cores — produced the famous “cat neuron” result: a neuron that fired selectively in response to images of cats, learned without any labels. The work, published in a 2012 ICML paper by Quoc Le, Marc’Aurelio Ranzato, Rajat Monga, Matthieu Devin, Greg Corrado, Kai Chen, Jeff Dean, and Ng, became a media sensation and demonstrated the power of unsupervised deep learning at scale.

Ng’s time at Google Brain also advanced TensorFlow’s intellectual precursors and established the research agenda that would grow into Google’s dominant AI presence. He left Google Brain in 2014 to join Baidu as Chief Scientist.

Coursera and the Democratisation of Machine Learning

In 2011, while still at Stanford, Ng began offering his machine learning course free online. It attracted 100,000 students in its first iteration. In 2012 he co-founded Coursera with Daphne Koller, licensing courses from Stanford and quickly partnering with Princeton, Michigan, Penn, and dozens of other major universities. Baidu: AI in China’s Largest Search Engine

From May 2014 to March 2017, Ng served as Chief Scientist at Baidu, leading Baidu Research, which comprised the Silicon Valley AI Lab (SVAIL) and the Beijing AI Lab (IDL). At Baidu, Ng and his team made significant contributions to speech recognition, natural language processing, and autonomous driving technology. The Baidu speech recognition system, trained on thousands of hours of audio using deep learning, surpassed human-level performance on certain benchmarks in 2015 — a result announced in the paper “Deep Speech 2: End-to-End Speech Recognition in English and Mandarin” (ICML 2016).

Ng left Baidu in March 2017 after what was reported as disagreements over the organisation’s research direction and pace of publication. He returned to academic and entrepreneurial activities.

DeepLearning.AI and Landing AI

In 2017 Ng founded DeepLearning.AI, an education technology company focused on AI training. The company’s Deep Learning Specialisation on Coursera — five courses covering neural networks, convolutional networks, sequence models, and structuring ML projects — quickly became the most popular deep learning curriculum available online, with millions of completions. Also in 2017, Ng founded Landing AI, focused on deploying AI in industrial and enterprise settings, particularly in manufacturing, agriculture, and healthcare. Ng has articulated the “AI Transformation Playbook” — a framework for helping traditional industries systematically adopt AI — and deployed it across dozens of companies.
