How to Turn Off Gemini

Updated September 30, 2026: You can no longer switch an Android phone back to Google Assistant. Google began removing it on September 3. The Android section below now shows what you can still turn off. Nest and Home speakers keep Assistant for now.

At a glance

Gemini now shows up across Google: in Gmail and Docs, on Android (where it has now fully replaced Google Assistant), in Chrome, and in Search. You can switch most of it off: turn the Gmail and Docs side panel off, stop Android’s power button and “Hey Google” from opening it, hide it in Chrome, and use the Web filter in Search. Nothing breaks, it is reversible, and on a work account your admin may control it. Here is how, app by app.

Google has put Gemini almost everywhere, and not everyone wants it there. Maybe you do not use it, it feels distracting, you preferred Google Assistant, or you have privacy questions. Whatever the reason, you can turn Gemini off in each spot it appears. None of this harms your Google account, and you can switch it back on whenever you like.

How do I turn off Gemini in Gmail and Workspace?

In Gmail, Docs, and the other Workspace apps, Gemini appears as a side panel and a “Help me write” option. To switch it off on a personal account, open the app’s Settings, look for the Gemini or smart features option, and turn it off. That hides the side panel and the AI buttons. On a work or school account, your organization’s admin controls whether Gemini is available, so the toggle may be greyed out and you would need to ask your IT team.

How do I turn off Gemini on Android?

Going back to Google Assistant is no longer an option. In a community announcement, Google said it began removing Assistant on September 3, 2026, and that afterward “you will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet, or paired devices.” That includes Wear OS watches, compatible earbuds, and Android Auto when it runs from your phone. You can still keep Gemini out of your way:

  • Stop the power button opening Gemini. On a Pixel 6 or newer, go to Settings, System, Gestures, Press and hold power button, and choose Power menu. Google’s steps.
  • Turn off “Hey Google.” In the Gemini app, open Settings and switch off “Talk to Gemini hands-free.” Google’s steps.
  • Check the default assistant. Go to Settings, Apps, Default apps, Digital assistant app. Some phones let you pick None here; others don’t.
  • Stop your chats being saved. At gemini.google.com, open Settings & help, then Activity, and turn it off. Google says it still keeps chats for up to 72 hours. Google’s steps.
  • Uninstall the Gemini app if you like, but Google notes that deleting the app doesn’t automatically remove Gemini as your default assistant.

How do I turn off Gemini in Chrome and Search?

Where Gemini appearsHow to turn it off
Gmail, Docs, WorkspaceApp Settings, then turn off Gemini / smart features
Android phoneChange the power-button shortcut and turn off “Hey Google” (switching back to Assistant is no longer possible)
Chrome browserHide the Gemini button in Chrome settings
Google SearchUse the “Web” results filter to skip AI Overviews

In Chrome, you can hide the Gemini button from the browser settings. In Google Search, fully removing AI Overviews is limited, but you can click the Web filter under the search bar to see plain links, and you can set Web as a preferred view in some regions. The exact wording shifts as Google updates these features.

Can I remove Gemini completely?

On a personal account, mostly yes. You can turn it off in Workspace apps, switch off its shortcuts on Android, hide it in Chrome, and avoid it in Search, which removes it from the places you actually see it. On a managed work device, full removal is up to your IT admin. Either way, turning Gemini off is reversible, so you are not making a permanent change.

Why would you turn off Gemini?

  • You do not use it and want a simpler, cleaner interface
  • You preferred Google Assistant for voice and smart-home control (it still runs on Nest and Home speakers, but not on phones)
  • You find the AI buttons and panels distracting
  • You have privacy questions about AI features at work

Turning a tool off is a valid choice. Using AI well includes deciding when not to use it. If Gemini is not helping you, switching it off is sensible, not anti-AI. And if your hesitation is about privacy rather than the feature itself, it is worth understanding what these tools do with your data, which our guide to AI data safety covers.

Is it safe to disable Gemini?

Yes. Turning off or switching away from Gemini does not damage your phone, browser, or Google account, and your emails, files, and settings are untouched. It simply removes the AI features until you choose to add them back. If you later want to try it again, you can re-enable Gemini or compare it with other tools in our chatbots compared guide.

Common questions about turning off Gemini

Will turning off Gemini delete my Google data?

No. Switching Gemini off only removes the AI features. Your Gmail, Drive files, photos, and account stay exactly as they are. You can also clear your Gemini activity separately if you want.

Can I get Google Assistant back after switching to Gemini?

Not on a phone. Google began removing Assistant from Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, earbuds and phone-based Android Auto on September 3, 2026. Nest and Home speakers and displays, and cars with Google built-in, keep Assistant for now.

Why does Gemini keep coming back after updates?

Google sometimes re-enables features in updates. If Gemini reappears, repeat the same steps to turn it off. On work accounts, your admin settings usually keep things consistent.

Can I turn off AI Overviews in Google Search?

Fully removing them is limited, but clicking the “Web” filter shows plain link results without the AI summary. Some browser extensions also hide AI Overviews if you want them gone by default.
