Who is Demis Hassabis?
Sir Demis Hassabis (born 1976) is the CEO of Google DeepMind, the AI research division at Google. He co-founded DeepMind in London in 2010 (acquired by Google in 2014 for around $500 million) and has led it through landmark achievements including AlphaGo, AlphaZero, AlphaFold, and the Gemini model family.
Hassabis is unusual among AI lab leaders in his depth as a researcher. He holds a PhD in cognitive neuroscience from University College London and was a chess prodigy who made master level by age 13. He was a successful video-game designer (lead designer of Theme Park, age 17) before returning to academia. He was knighted by King Charles III in 2024.
Why does Demis Hassabis matter?
Hassabis is the only AI lab CEO with a Nobel Prize. He shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with John Jumper (also of DeepMind) and David Baker, for AlphaFold — the system that predicted the 3D structures of essentially every protein known to science, solving a 50-year-old problem in molecular biology.
