What is Character AI?
Character AI is a consumer AI platform launched in September 2022 by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, former Google engineers who previously worked on LaMDA. The app at character.ai lets users create fictional characters and chat with them — anything from Albert Einstein to Goku to a custom “therapist” or “tutor” or made-up persona.
Characters are created from a short description (“a stern but kind English professor who loves Hemingway”) plus optional example dialogues. Users can chat with characters made by others or build their own. The platform has more than 20 million monthly active users and is unusual among consumer AI products for its skew toward young users.
Why does Character AI matter?
Character AI is the clearest example of AI being used primarily for entertainment and social interaction rather than work. While ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini compete on productivity tasks, Character AI competes for emotional engagement — people use it for hours per day, often longer than they spend on ChatGPT.
It also surfaces real questions about AI emotional design: how much should AI products encourage continued engagement? What’s appropriate for younger users? How do AI relationships affect human relationships? These have made Character AI a focal point in policy discussions about AI safety beyond the “will AI take over” framing — focused instead on the more immediate question of what AI does to attention, mental health, and social development.
How do you use Character AI?
Sign up at character.ai (web or mobile app). Browse featured characters or search by topic. Click any character to start chatting — no setup needed. Conversations save to your account and can resume later.
Free tier is generous (essentially unlimited chat). Paid c.ai+ ($9.99/month in 2026) unlocks faster responses, character voice (text-to-speech), and access to premium features.
Important practical note: Character AI applies content filters that are stricter than ChatGPT or Claude. The product is heavily moderated to be appropriate for younger users. Users seeking unfiltered AI role-play often complain about the moderation; this is intentional product design, not a bug.
