What it is: A comparison of the three main ways to use Claude — the web app, the desktop app, and Claude in VS Code
Who it’s for: Anyone deciding which Claude interface to use regularly
Best if: You’re setting up a Claude workflow and want to pick the right tool from the start
Skip if: You need a comparison of Claude models (Haiku vs Sonnet vs Opus) — that’s a different question
Bottom line: The web app is the best starting point for most people. The desktop app adds convenience but not new features. VS Code is for developers who want Claude inside their code editor.
Quick Verdict (TL;DR)
- Start here → Claude Web (claude.ai): Works for everyone, no install required, full features
- Add this if you use Claude constantly → Claude Desktop: System tray access, keyboard shortcut, works across apps
- For developers only → Claude in VS Code: Coding assistance directly in your editor, via Claude Code or Copilot-style integrations
Claude Web (claude.ai)
The web interface at claude.ai is where most people use Claude. It runs in any browser, requires no installation, and gives you access to the full Claude feature set — including Projects, file uploads, model selection, and conversation history.
What it does well
- Works on any device — desktop, laptop, tablet, phone
- Full access to Projects, conversation history, and all Claude models
- Drag-and-drop file uploads (PDFs, images, documents)
- Easy to share conversations or export content
- No setup required
Where it falls short
- You have to switch to a browser tab to use it — adds friction for quick tasks
- No integration with your desktop environment or other apps
- No keyboard shortcut to summon it from anywhere
Best for: Everyone. This is the default. Use it unless you have a specific reason to switch.
Claude Desktop App
Claude Desktop is a native application for Mac and Windows. It sits in your system tray and can be summoned with a keyboard shortcut from anywhere on your computer — you don’t need to switch to a browser.
What it does well
- Open Claude instantly with a keyboard shortcut — no tab switching
- Works across your desktop without interrupting what you’re doing
- Supports MCP (Model Context Protocol) — lets Claude connect to local files, databases, and tools on your computer
- Can see your screen if you grant permission — useful for “explain what’s on my screen” or “help me with this form”
Where it falls short
- Feature parity with the web — you’re not getting capabilities unavailable on claude.ai
- Requires installation and occasional updates
- MCP setup requires technical configuration to actually use
Best for: People who use Claude many times a day and want to reduce friction. Power users, writers, researchers, and anyone annoyed by switching tabs constantly.
Claude in VS Code (Claude Code)
Claude Code is a separate product — a command-line tool and VS Code extension that brings Claude directly into your development environment. It can read and edit files, run terminal commands, understand your entire codebase, and work autonomously on longer coding tasks.
What it does well
- Reads your actual codebase — understands the full project, not just pasted snippets
- Can write, edit, and create files directly in your editor
- Runs terminal commands to test code, install dependencies, and debug
- Handles multi-file refactors that would be tedious to do manually
- Works as an agentic coding assistant — you describe what you want, it figures out the steps
Where it falls short
- Requires separate installation and API key setup
- Billed separately from Claude Pro — usage is metered by API tokens
- Not useful if you don’t write or edit code regularly
- Steeper learning curve than the web interface
Best for: Developers. If you write code and haven’t tried Claude Code, it’s worth the setup time. For non-developers, skip it.

Who Should Use Which
Casual users and beginners
Start with the web interface. It has everything you need and nothing to install. Once you’re using Claude regularly and want faster access, consider the desktop app.
Knowledge workers and content creators
The web interface handles most tasks well. The desktop app is worth adding if you’re switching to Claude from other apps throughout your workday. The keyboard shortcut alone saves real time.
Developers
Use both the web interface for general tasks and Claude Code (VS Code) for coding work. They serve different purposes and don’t overlap much.
Power users and automation builders
The desktop app with MCP configured is powerful — Claude can read local files, connect to databases, and integrate with tools on your computer. This requires some setup but unlocks significantly more capability.
Switching and Migration Advice
Your Claude account is the same across all interfaces. Your Projects, conversation history, and preferences are all stored in your account — not in the app itself. Switching between web and desktop is seamless.
Claude Code is a separate product with its own billing. You can use it alongside a Claude Pro subscription — they’re independent.
