If you use Notion for notes and docs, you’ve probably wondered whether Notion AI is enough or if you should also subscribe to Claude or ChatGPT. This post answers that.

Three tools. Three different design philosophies. One should be your primary writing assistant. The other two are usually not worth paying for if you have the first.

What each tool actually is

Notion AI is the AI built directly into Notion. It reads your existing notes, summarizes pages, generates content inside Notion blocks, and answers questions about the documents in your workspace. It doesn’t exist as a standalone product.

Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant. Standalone web app, mobile apps, and developer tools. Known for writing quality, careful reasoning, and the ability to handle very long documents.

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s AI assistant. Also standalone, with the broadest set of features in the consumer AI market — image generation, voice mode, live web search, scheduled tasks, and a long list of integrations.

For writing specifically, the three feel very different in practice. Below: what each one is genuinely good at, what each one struggles with, and which writer should use which.

Notion AI: strengths and weaknesses for writing

What Notion AI does well:

Writing inside your existing notes. You highlight a paragraph, ask for a rewrite, and the rewrite appears in place. No copy-paste.
Summarizing long documents. Drop a 15-page Notion doc on Notion AI and get a clean summary at the top of the same page.
Q&A across your workspace. “What did the marketing team decide about pricing in November?” If the answer lives in a Notion page somewhere, Notion AI usually finds it.
Block-by-block writing inside templates. Meeting notes, project briefs, status updates — Notion AI knows the structure of common templates and fills them in cleanly.

What Notion AI struggles with:

Long-form writing. Multi-thousand-word essays, ebooks, white papers. The output quality drops once you go beyond a few paragraphs.
Holding a voice. When you want writing in your specific voice, Notion AI is competent but not memorable.
Reasoning that requires comparing several sources. If your document needs to weigh tradeoffs across documents, the output can feel surface-level.
Anything outside Notion. If you want to write a blog post, an email, or a tweet, you’re going to be copying out of Notion anyway.

Pricing: $10 per workspace member per month, on top of your Notion subscription. Or $8 if billed annually. There’s no standalone Notion AI tier — you need a Notion paid plan first.

Claude: strengths and weaknesses for writing

What Claude does well:

Long-form writing. Essays, white papers, book chapters, sales pages. The writing quality is consistently the best among consumer AI tools.
Voice matching. Give Claude three of your past articles and ask it to write a new one in the same voice. The result is genuinely close.
Long context. You can drop a 50-page PDF and ask questions about page 32. Claude tracks the whole document in a way Notion AI and ChatGPT both struggle with.
Editing existing writing. Paste in your draft, ask Claude to tighten it, and the result keeps your voice while removing fluff. Most writers describe this as the single biggest AI productivity gain they get from any tool.
Following style instructions. “Use short sentences. No em-dashes. Never start a paragraph with ‘Additionally.’” Claude holds these rules across long sessions better than competitors.

What Claude struggles with:

Live information. Claude doesn’t browse the web by default. If your post needs today’s stock prices or yesterday’s news, you have to bring the data in.
Image generation. No native image generation. Use Midjourney, DALL-E (via ChatGPT), or Google’s Imagen separately.
Workflow inside an existing app. Claude is a great tab in your browser. It doesn’t live inside Notion, Google Docs, or Word in the way Notion AI lives inside Notion.

What ChatGPT does well:

Broad task coverage. Image generation, voice mode, live web search, file analysis, scheduled tasks, agent operations. All in one product.
First-draft speed. If you need rough content fast on a wide range of topics, ChatGPT is reliably quick.
Live information. ChatGPT has built-in web search. Ask about today’s news and you get an answer with citations.
The integration ecosystem. Custom GPTs, Operator agents, the new Personal Finance bank connections, Codex on mobile. The product surface is the deepest.

What ChatGPT struggles with:

Writing quality on serious work. Competent. Rarely memorable. The default voice has a slight cheerleader energy that you have to actively prompt out.
Holding style instructions across long documents. Drift sets in faster than with Claude.
Long-document handling. ChatGPT can handle long documents but loses precision in the middle pages on very long inputs.

Which one for which kind of writer

Plain-English decision tree. Read until something matches.

You write mostly inside Notion and want AI in the same window? Notion AI. Skip the others unless you also write outside Notion frequently.
You write long-form essays, ebooks, newsletters, or sales pages? Claude. Pair with Notion AI if you also need workspace Q&A.
You want one tool that does many things (writing, images, voice, web search, agents)? ChatGPT. Pair with Claude if writing quality is the deciding factor for your main work.
You’re a student? Claude for essays and serious assignments. ChatGPT for research with citations. Notion AI only if your school workflow already lives in Notion.
You’re a business writer (proposals, reports, presentations)? Claude as the primary, ChatGPT for charts and image generation. Skip Notion AI unless your company is already on Notion.

My personal stack

Claude is my primary writing tool. ChatGPT is my secondary tool for live information and image generation. I don’t pay for Notion AI — I use Notion as a notes app and let Claude handle the writing inside the Notion docs when I export them.

Total monthly cost: $40 across two tools instead of $58 across three. If I worked inside Notion more deeply — if my team coordinated there, if my brand-voice library lived there — I’d add Notion AI and probably drop ChatGPT.

The honest principle: don’t pay for an AI assistant that mostly duplicates what your primary one does. Pay for tools that fill a clear gap.

Is Notion AI worth it if I already have Claude?

Do professional writers use AI?

Many do, especially for the unglamorous parts of the job: research, first drafts of difficult sections, editing for clarity, tightening prose. The polished final voice usually remains the writer’s. Claude is the most common pick among the working writers I know.

The bottom line

Pick the tool that matches where you already write. If that’s Notion, Notion AI. If it’s anywhere serious, Claude. If you need one tool for many jobs beyond writing, ChatGPT. Most people are better off paying for one or two of these, not all three.

The single most expensive AI mistake is paying for three competing tools when one of them does 90% of what you need.
