AI Summary
What it is: Adobe Firefly Video Model is Adobe’s proprietary AI video generator, marketed as the industry’s first commercially safe video model. Trained exclusively on licensed Adobe Stock content and public-domain material.
Who it’s for: Enterprise brands, agencies, regulated industries, and any creative team where IP-safe training data and indemnification are procurement requirements.
Best if: You use Premiere Pro, After Effects, or other Adobe tools already, you need Content Credentials (C2PA) on outputs, or you need IP indemnification.
Skip if: You need maximum capability over commercial safety (use Veo 3.1 or Runway Gen-4.5), or you need long single-shot clips (Firefly tops out at 5 seconds native).
What is Adobe Firefly Video?
Adobe Firefly Video Model is Adobe’s in-house generative AI video model, designed from the start around two priorities most competitors do not optimize for: commercial safety and integration with Adobe Creative Cloud. The model produces text-to-video and image-to-video clips, generates sound effects and voice via separate Firefly models, and ships inside Premiere Pro as the engine behind the Generative Extend feature.
Adobe’s framing — the line they repeat in every announcement — is “commercially safe.” That language anchors three specific guarantees:
- Training data is licensed only. Adobe Stock with contributor compensation, Adobe-owned content, and openly licensed public-domain works. Adobe explicitly does not train on scraped web content.
- IP indemnification. Customers on qualifying Firefly plans get Adobe-backed indemnification on IP-infringement claims against eligible Firefly-generated outputs. No other major AI video lab offers this.
- Content Credentials. Every Firefly output carries C2PA-compliant Content Credentials disclosing AI generation — required by some advertisers, broadcasters, and government work.
The launch sequence:
- October 14, 2024: Firefly Video Model announced; limited beta opens; Generative Extend launches in Premiere Pro beta.
- February 12, 2025: New Firefly web app plus Firefly Video Model enters public beta with standalone subscription tiers.
- October 2025 (Adobe MAX): Firefly Video Model 2 announced; 4K support; Generate Sound Effects and Generate Voice models added.
- December 16, 2025: Web-based Firefly video editor launches with multi-track timeline, prompt-to-edit, transcript editing, 4K upscaling via Topaz Astra, and Runway Aleph plus FLUX.2 integrated as partner models.
- 2026: Adobe runs an unlimited-generation promotion on eligible Pro and Premium plans through May 20, 2026 on firefly.adobe.com.
What makes Adobe Firefly Video different?
Five capabilities set Firefly Video apart from Veo 3.1, Runway Gen-4.5, and the Chinese models.
Firefly trains only on licensed material, sourced from Adobe Stock (with contributor compensation specifically for AI-training rights), Adobe-owned content, and openly licensed public-domain works. For brands and agencies that need to defend their AI use to legal, this is the differentiator. Adobe Stock contributors receive bonuses for content used in training.
IP indemnification. On qualifying Firefly plans, Adobe will defend customers against IP-infringement claims on eligible generated outputs, subject to plan terms. This is functionally insurance against an entire risk category that competing models do not address.
Generative Extend in Premiere Pro. Add frames to the beginning or end of an existing clip to fix timing without reshooting. This is unique to Adobe and is the feature working editors reach for most often. You film a 4.2-second clip but need 5.5 seconds to match the music cue. Generative Extend fills the gap.
Firefly Video Model integrates natively with Creative Cloud, callable from Premiere Pro, After Effects, and the standalone Firefly web app. It is the only AI video model with a real seat inside a professional non-linear editor.
Content Credentials (C2PA). Every Firefly output carries C2PA-compliant metadata disclosing AI generation. Required by some advertisers and broadcasters. Some governments (EU AI Act compliance, US disclosure proposals) are moving toward content-provenance requirements that Firefly is already aligned with.
Two additional features added in December 2025 are worth knowing:
- Prompt to Edit (powered by partner Runway Aleph) — refine specific parts of an AI-generated clip without regenerating the whole thing.
- Camera motion reference — upload a start frame plus a reference video and Firefly mimics the camera move.
How much does Adobe Firefly Video cost?
| Tier | Price (monthly) | Credits | Approx clip count | Max resolution | Max native clip |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firefly Free | $0 | 25/month | A handful low-res | 720p | 5 sec |
| Firefly Standard | $9.99 | 2,000 premium credits | ~20 × 5-sec 1080p clips | 1080p | 5 sec |
| Firefly Pro | $29.99 | 7,000 premium credits | ~70 × 5-sec 1080p clips | 1080p (4K coming) | 5 sec |
| Firefly Premium | $199.99 | 50,000 premium credits | ~500 clips | 4K | 5 sec + Generative Extend |
| Creative Cloud All Apps | $59.99 (existing CC subscribers) | Bundled allotment | N/A | N/A | N/A |
The promotion to know: Through May 20, 2026, Adobe is running an “unlimited generations” promotion on eligible Pro and Premium plans for select models and resolutions on firefly.adobe.com. Important caveat: unlimited applies only to the native Firefly Video Model, not the partner models (Runway, Veo, Pika), which still draw credits. Verify the current state of this promo before signing up — promotions roll forward or expire.
A Firefly Pro user gets approximately 70 five-second 1080p clips per month from the credit allowance. For agencies and brands producing campaign-level volumes, that may run out; Premium at $199.99/month is where high-volume production usually lands.
How do you actually use Adobe Firefly Video?
Three primary paths, plus a partner-model option:
The Firefly web app at firefly.adobe.com. The standalone surface for text-to-video and image-to-video generation. Best entry point if you do not use other Creative Cloud tools yet.
Premiere Pro Generative Extend. Inside Premiere Pro, select a clip on the timeline that needs more frames at the start or end, choose Generative Extend, and Adobe fills the gap with model-generated frames matching the clip’s look. This is the workflow most working editors find indispensable; it is faster than re-prompting from scratch and integrated where you already work.
After Effects integration. Available for keyframe-driven motion graphics workflows. Less commonly used than the Premiere Pro path but available for specific compositing tasks.
Partner models inside Firefly. The December 2025 web editor brought third-party models — Runway Aleph, Veo 3, Pika 2.2, Luma Ray 2, FLUX.2 — into the Firefly interface. You can route a generation to a partner model if the native Firefly model does not have the right capability. Partner models are not covered by Adobe’s indemnification.
Prompting practice that pays off:
- Specify the camera move. Firefly handles camera motion well when described explicitly (dolly, pan, push-in).
- Use Generative Extend instead of re-prompting. If you have a clip that almost works but is too short, extend it; the result preserves the original look better than a new generation.
- Layer Generate Sound Effects. Firefly’s audio is generated separately from video on the current model. Build the video first, then add SFX tracks; the workflow is cleaner than expecting native audio.
Who is using Adobe Firefly Video in production?
Adobe has a strong enterprise customer roster, particularly compared to creator-first competitors. Named customers (from Adobe’s February and September 2025 announcements):
- PepsiCo / Gatorade — Gatorade.com personalization (the Gatorade Squeeze bottle customizer) is powered by Firefly Services.
- The Coca-Cola Company — Project Fizzion; collaboration on Firefly Design Intelligence “StyleIDs.”
- Mattel — scaling content creation across brands.
- IBM — enterprise rollout.
- Deloitte Digital, dentsu, IPG Health, Stagwell — agency-side adoption.
- Tapestry (Coach, Kate Spade, Stuart Weitzman parent) — brand content workflows.
Ely Greenfield, CTO of Digital Media at Adobe, on the data approach (Fortune, July 2025):
Every piece of content that we train on is something that we have acquired the license of, or that is published under a verifiable and known license. There’s the raw science of how you build the model, but a massive amount of work goes into data curation and preparation. The average piece of content on the internet isn’t necessarily what you want to put in your ad.

How does Adobe Firefly Video compare to Veo, Runway, Seedance, Kling, and Pika?
| Model | Max native clip | Max resolution | IP indemnification | Audience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Firefly Video | 5 sec (Extend-able) | 4K (Premium) | Yes (eligible plans) | Enterprise, agencies, regulated industries |
| Veo 3.1 | 8 sec | 4K (via upscale) | No | All |
| Runway Gen-4.5 | 10 sec | 4K (Pro) | No | Pros, creators |
| Seedance 2.0 | 15 sec | 1080p | No | High-volume |
| Kling 3.0 | 15 sec | 1080p | No | Narrative work |
| Pika 2.5 | 25 sec (Pikaframes) | 1080p | No | Creators, social |
Firefly’s pitch is not the best clip quality. It is the paperwork: indemnification, provenance, and legal sign-off. If a creative team needs to defend its AI use to legal, present Content Credentials in delivery, or get insurance against IP claims, Firefly is the right choice. For raw capability or longest single clips, the dedicated video labs are stronger choices, and Adobe ships those models as partner integrations inside Firefly.
What are Adobe Firefly Video’s limitations?
Four limitations to plan around.
Five-second native clip ceiling. The native Firefly Video Model caps single generations at 5 seconds. Generative Extend stretches that on the timeline, but the underlying generative cap is short compared to Seedance (15 sec) or Kling (15 sec). For long single-shot work, this is a constraint.
Audio is layered, not unified. Generate Sound Effects and Generate Voice are separate models from the video generator. Veo 3.1 and Seedance 2.0 generate synchronized audio in the same pass. Firefly’s timeline-based workflow is fine for most production work, but for rapid dialogue clips Veo is faster.
Adobe has not fully consolidated the GA / beta line as of May 2026, so some Firefly Video surfaces are still labeled “public beta.” For procurement that requires GA-only, verify the specific feature you depend on before committing.
The training-data story is not as clean as the headline guarantee suggests. Adobe Stock now contains user-uploaded AI-generated content (which Adobe says is gated and labeled to keep training data clean), and the “trained on AI-of-AI” concern has not been independently audited. For most users this is theoretical; for compliance teams looking for an audit trail, ask Adobe directly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Adobe Firefly Video free?
The Free tier gives you 25 monthly credits, which is enough for a handful of low-resolution clips. For 1080p output and commercial use, you need Standard ($9.99/mo) or higher.
What is Generative Extend?
A Premiere Pro feature powered by Firefly Video Model that adds AI-generated frames to the start or end of an existing clip. Useful for fixing timing issues without reshooting. The closest competitor capability is Runway’s Aleph, but Generative Extend is integrated directly into Premiere Pro and does not require leaving the editor.
What is IP indemnification?
Adobe’s commitment to defend customers against IP-infringement claims on eligible Firefly-generated outputs, subject to plan terms. If a third party sues you claiming your AI-generated content infringes their IP, Adobe covers the legal defense within plan terms. It is the one guarantee competitors do not match.
What are Content Credentials (C2PA)?
A standardized metadata format that discloses how a piece of content was made, including whether AI was involved. Firefly automatically attaches Content Credentials to every output. The C2PA standard is backed by Adobe, Microsoft, the BBC, and others, and is becoming a procurement requirement for some advertisers and broadcasters.
Does Adobe Firefly Video include audio?
Not natively. The Firefly Video Model generates video without audio. Generate Sound Effects and Generate Voice are separate Firefly models added at Adobe MAX in October 2025, currently in beta. The workflow is layered — generate video, then add SFX and voice as separate tracks in your timeline.
Can I use Firefly Video clips commercially?
Yes, on paid plans. Adobe’s “commercially safe” positioning is specifically about commercial use being permitted and supported with the IP indemnification described above.
Should I use Firefly or Veo / Runway / Kling?
Use Firefly if you need IP indemnification, you work in Premiere Pro, you have Content Credentials as a requirement, or your brand legal team has flagged scraped-training-data models as a risk. Use Veo 3.1, Runway Gen-4.5, or the Chinese models if maximum capability, longest single clip, or lowest per-clip cost matters more than commercial safety.
