What it is: Deep Research is an asynchronous AI research mode where the AI browses dozens of web sources for 5-15 minutes and writes a structured cited report. Available in Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.
Who it is for: Anyone who does research where multiple sources need to be synthesized — competitive analysis, comparison shopping, policy research, market analysis.
Best if: You have a research question that would take you 30+ minutes of manual searching and reading. Deep Research collapses that to a few minutes.
Skip if: You need a quick factual answer — Deep Research is overkill. Want one practical AI workflow every morning? Subscribe to our free daily newsletter.
What is Deep Research?
Deep Research is the name multiple AI labs gave to similar features that launched in 2024-2025: an AI mode that takes a research question, spends 5-15 minutes browsing dozens of sources, then writes a structured report with citations. Google’s version (in Gemini) launched December 2024; OpenAI’s version (in ChatGPT) followed in February 2025; Perplexity has had similar Pro Search/Deep Research features for longer.
The output is unlike normal AI answers: a 1,000-3,000 word document with section headings, footnoted citations, often comparison tables and bullet lists. For research-shaped questions — “compare the top 5 CRM tools for solo consultants in 2026” or “what does recent evidence say about creatine for women over 50” — Deep Research replaces hours of manual work.
Why does Deep Research matter?
Deep Research is the closest thing yet to having an AI research assistant. The capability changes the economics of certain knowledge work — competitive intelligence, market research, policy briefings, due diligence — by reducing turnaround time from hours to minutes. Many knowledge workers have integrated Deep Research into weekly workflows that previously couldn’t justify the manual time investment.
The technique that makes Deep Research possible: agentic browsing combined with long-context reasoning. The AI plans the research approach, executes browsing across many sources in parallel, accumulates context, then writes the synthesis. This is the same pattern that powers most modern AI agents.
How do you use Deep Research?
In Gemini: select Deep Research mode in the prompt box. Free tier has limits (~5/month); AI Pro and Ultra raise them significantly.
In ChatGPT: select Deep Research from the tools menu. Available to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users with usage caps that scale by tier.
In Perplexity: select Pro Search for shorter research; Deep Research mode for the longer asynchronous version.
Best practices: write specific, structured questions; ask for tables and citations; review the cited sources rather than trusting the synthesis blindly.
